National Trust

J was given membership of the National Trust for xmas by my Mum & Dad, and we've been making the most of it.

Went to Sissinghurst three weekends ago, and checked out the beautiful gardens there. We'd been there last year on the day her Mum died, so it was (and will be) a bit of a memorial - where nicer to spend a difficult day.

Then two weekends ago, it was the turn of Scotney Castle - they've opened the house there as well now, and it's a very interesting place, with some lovely 60's and 70's art, particularly John Ward and John Piper. The house itself is a mid/late-1800's place in stone, dug from the garden, an enterprising way of keeping costs down. Nice cafe too, and beautiful weather.

Then last weekend we went to Chartwell, home to Sir Winston Chruchill (BBC's Greatest Briton) so we were repeatedly told. Gardens were quite pretty, especially the lovely rose garden with all yellow/gold flowers to celebrate his golden wedding anniversary with wife Clemmie, but the house was lovely and the history amazing. Among the items on display was a tiny gold shell given to him by the Winkle Club, fishermen from the Old Town in Hastings. Very interesting.

As a contrast, this weekend coming we are doing a boot fair - lovely!!
