Gallery Visit - 02/12/08

Had a great day in London on Tuesday - two exhibitions which couldn't have been more different if they had tried. Started at the Gagosian in Kings Cross for Richard Serra and his huge rusting steel sculptures. One of them - "Open Ended" - was like a maze you could walk through - the interior space had the weirdest acoustics.

Two others were curved open-topped rooms with a thin slit for a doorway. Again, acoustics were interesting, and the space enclosed made me question whether I was looking at art or architecture - either way fantastic. The final piece was a 2001 Space Odyssey style monolith, on it's side and with a highly textured surface which you could stand in front of a study all day. Loved the show and wished I'd seen his drawing exhibition which is now closed. Damn.

Then skipped over to Tate Britain to see the Francis Bacon. If you like paintings, I can't see how you could fail to be impressed with Bacon's superb control, even though the images might be a little hard to swallow. They have a brutal beauty, especially his surprisingly tender portraits of his partner George Dyer.

Altogether a great day out, finished off by a lovely sushi supper in Covent Garden.
